Dorcy Rugamba

Author, actor and stage director,founder of the "Urwintore" workshops and the Rwanda Arts Initiatives creation and promotion agency.

Dorcy was born in 1969 in Rwanda into a family of artists. He is trained in the Rwandan tradition of "Intore" dancers. And founded his first company of dance and Theater "Isango", in 1992 in Butare. After studying pharmacy at the National University of Rwanda and at the Catholic University of Louvain, Dorcy entered the Royal Conservatory of Music in Liège in the drama department to come out with the first prize. He is the founder of the Rwanda Arts Initiatives Arts Creation and Promotion Agency. In 1999 he co-wrote with five other authors, the piece "Rwanda 94", created at the Festival d'Avignon by the Belgian company Groupov in a staging by Jacques Delcuvellerie. The coin several awards in Belgium and France. In 2004, ten years after the genocide, after four seasons (in Europe, Canada, the Caribbean), "Rwanda 94" is presented to the Rwandan public in Butare, Kigali and Bisesero. He develops a pedagogy of teaching of the theater which he applies in formations in England, in Belgium, in Senegal. In 2001, he founded the "Urwintore" Workshops in Kigali, a space for training, creation and research on the performing arts. It is in this context that in 2005, he staged "The Instruction" by Peter Weiss, which he turned in Rwanda, then in France, Belgium, England, Japan, and the United States. In 2004, 2006 and 2008 Dorcy plays under the direction of Peter Brook, Rosa Gasquet and Milo Rau. He is the author of "Marembo" a poetic account of the last days of his family in Rwanda. From "Bloody Niggers! A piece premiered at the Théâtre National de Belgique in 2007, staged by Jacques Delcuvellerie. In 2010, the text "Return to Paradise" is presented as a work stage at the farm of Bel Ebat in Yveline. A short version, "Market Place", is presented as part of the Bruisses de la langue, edition 2010. The same year he finished "Gamblers or the last war of the soldier Hungry" which he directs. The piece was premiered in April 2011 at the Zuiderspershuis in Antwerp.
