PRESENTATION OF THE SESSION

KENYA INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS (KIPPRA) AND BROOKINGS INSTITUTIONS – AFRICA GROWTH INITIATIVE The presentation of about 40 minutes will covers the findings for a study done collaboratively between KIPPRA and Brookings Institution. The study aimed at addressing challenges faced by urban population in Nairobi that include lack of productive jobs, inadequate housing, low levels of accessibility and high costs relative to the level of development. This study has proposed a framework detailing the primary constraints to Nairobi city and possible solutions to generate productive jobs, improve business environment  and therefore making Nairobi city become competitive in global markets and offer better link workers to firms and firms to markets. The specific objectives of the study were:  
  1. Review policy and legal frameworks that support urban growth in Nairobi county
  2. Establish the key economic activities that support urban growth in Nairobi county
  3. Establish potential of the Nairobi county to create productive jobs
  4. Determine the level and distribution of accessibility within Nairobi county
  5. Review the business environment and constraints to support urban growth in Nairobi county
The presentation will highlight the main policy issues impending the growth of Nairobi city based the study objectives. Further the presentation will highlight the key policy recommendations to be considered by Nairobi City. It is hoped that findings of this study will help secondary cities like Kisumu to prepare adequately for future. A panel discussion comprised of experts from Brookings Institution and KIPPRA will further deliberate on the key issues that face cities and highlight recommendations. The panel discussion will take about 30 minutes. The session will have 30 minutes for Questions and Answers with the panellists. The contributions to be made in this session will help to further understand the policy issues capital and secondary cities face and forge the best ways to address such issues. KIPPRA and Brookings Institution are planning to undertake a similar study in Kisumu City. The session will further assist in solidifying the understanding of issues that Kisumu city face. The outcome of this session will be a brief report documenting the policy issues that cities are facing as they try to develop their local economy
