PRESENTATION OF THE SESSION

THE HAGUE ACADEMY FOR LOCAL GOVERNANCE
Africa’s urban population is expected to double over the next 25 years. By 2040, a majority of Africans are expected to be living in cities, making urbanisation a major trend shaping the African continent. So far, cities have been shaping into “unjust” cities, fuelled by a combination colonial history, inequalities, informality, among others. Against this background, we will discuss The Just City Index, a framework of 50 values, developed as a tool for communities to establish their own definition and principles for what makes each city or neighbourhood more just. The session aims to engage key stakeholders to discuss innovative ideas and practical steps for cities to realise the shared values of  a just city and combat injustice. The session will specifically examine:
  • How are African cities striving towards creating just cities?
  • What are the challenges of integrating human rights principles in creating just cities in Africa?
  • Which practical tools can be used to map the journey of African cities towards creating just cities for all?
  • How to make people’s voices heard and get them involved in the life of their city?
  • What is the role of the private sector in promoting social justice in cities?
The session will be relevant for the Africites summit, as it will contribute to strengthening the role of African local and regional governments, by discussing practical tools to build just cities, and by exploring how international development partners can better support them in the creation of just cities, towards achieving the UN agenda 2030.
