Intermediate cities offer an immense potential for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063. In 2015, cities with less than one million inhabitants in low-income countries hosted around two-thirds of the urban population. As these cities grow and become wealthier, local governments will not only have to ensure access to public services and infrastructure but also tackle potential challenges in Urban Sprawl, Urban Mobility, urban safety, Migration, solid waste management and reduction of carbon-intensive energy sources. City-to-city Peer learning accelerates the uptake of innovative and transformational practices that could enable cities make deliberate and strategic change. Modern practices can contribute towards adaptation of Cities to the complexities arising from increased Urbanization to improve service delivery and foster sustainable development. The Side events will present a platform for sharing of best practices and challenges of Urbanisation, assess a Compendium of good policy approaches and support both pilot projects and city-to-city partnerships. Objectives The City to City Peer Learning forum will present an opportunity to share knowledge on contemporary Urban Practices and approaches on Urban Solutions. The Peer Review Forum will stimulate discussions around the African Cities’ experience in: 1. Mobilizing Finance on Urban Innovative Projects and infrastructure to improve living standards within Cities. 2. Addressing challenges in legislation and city Governance Approaches. 3. Improving service delivery and urban safety through twining of African cities and integrated spatial development control. 4. Mainstreaming critical Urban Indicators and dimensions at Local, National and Regional Forums. Recommendations 1. Increased Cooperation and Partnership on developing trends on Sustainable Urbanization and Territorial development. 2. Increased engagement and awareness on contemporary Urban Development and Management Practices in Cities. 3. Promotion of Cities as important engines for accelerating achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in the Last Decade of Action. |
