Kisumu County is fronting itself as a global business and tourism destination owing to its location that is increasingly allowing easy movement across East and Central. Its location is strategic as a link to the great lakes’ region and a major influencer of business and social trends. It has made deliberate efforts to achieve massive infrastructural undertakings. Kisumu port has been refurbished and is playing a key role to aid maritime trade between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The government has also secured land at Miwani in Muhoroni for the establishment of a special economic zone. Kisumu is keen on show casing investment opportunities in untapped blue economy, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, industrialization, sports, culture and talent development, film, infrastructure, and energy, among other sectors. No better time to show case its investments opportunities than during the 9th edition of the AfriCities conference to be held in Kisumu May 17th to 21st 2022. This project is developed with the aim of opening up investment opportunities and creating partnerships for a sustainable future. Kisumu formulated four major growth drivers to endear the devolved unit to international investors. The four areas of focus are Kisumu spatial masterplan; health infrastructure and creating centers of excellence for telemedicine; high-speed wireless broadband networking; and destination branding. The county’s approach is geared towards solid commercial and social returns through a keen raft of value propositions to drive long-term growth and meet evolving investor needs. Kisumu has improved its business environment to help them achieve their investment goals. The new cargo division and cold storage facility at the Kisumu International Airport is key for both import and export trade of fresh crop, livestock and fisheries products to other parts of Kenya and beyond. The facility, which is interconnected to the local roads and railways network and the container terminal can also be used to auction various goods and items of trade, including tea from the lake’s hinterland. Under health and sanitation, investment opportunities exist in waste management of clinical and hazardous wastes, molecular science laboratory, vaccines development, malaria control, sickle cell anemia, hematological centers of excellence and specialize pediatric intervention. The Miwani Special Economic Zone will manufacture pharmaceuticals, non-pharmaceutical products, and medical equipment supplies to the entire eastern and central African region. In Tourism and sports, opportunities lay in adventure Sports: - Zip Lining, Wind Surfing, Bungie Jumping. Water Sports: - kayaking, canoeing, cruise shipping, jet-skiing, SCUBA-Diving, boat racing. Tourism facilities: - hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, homestays, tour operation, tour guiding, fish aquaria. MICE:- meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions; entertainment and events; Creative and Performing Arts: - Film Academy, theatre art, music studios, film production, fashion and design; cultural centers; Sports: - Sports Academy, Golf Course, Indoor Sports Arenas, Aquatic Sports. Kisumu county has opportunities in solid waste management, affordable housing especially for university campus that are located a distance from the main institutions as well as the growing population due to investors taking advantage of the opportunities. Kisumu is also linked to five other towns including, Ahero, Katitu, Maseno and Muhoroni. On Best practices, it has provided a good environment for business, the county has put in place right policies for investment decisions today, to guarantee the tomorrow Kisumu wishes to have. Project Goals and Objectives. Main objective: To show case Kisumu’s investment opportunities, in every aspect of the economy taking advantage of potential investors who will be attending the Africities Conference in the month of May 2022 as the audience. Specific objectives: 1. Seek for investment commitments from the public, the private sector, the civil society, faith-based organizations, development partners, philanthropy and impact investors. 2. Forge strong partnerships involving the people, investors from the private sector, development partners, and the cities government for possible investment out comes. |
