PRESENTATION OF THE SESSION

COOPERATION ARENA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA (CASDA)
The session is organized from the basis of stories on successful partnerships between Local Authorities in Kenya and Sweden for the purpose of enhancing local democracy and a story on an international collaboration between partners in seven African countries and Sweden on the rights for children to grow up in a world free from gender-based violence. The partnerships have been made possible due to the initiative and coordination by Yvonne Anyango, Director of CASDA – Cooperation Arena for Sustainable Development in Africa and Ingvar Rönnbäck, Founder of the company ADEP – Another Development Perspective Ltd and the think tank ADF - Another Development Foundation as well as by Ira Sundberg, Co-founder of CASDA and ADF. The partnerships have been funded mostly by Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) and Swedish Institute. The story began at the Africities Conference in Nairobi 2006 establishing a relation between a municipality in Sweden and Machakos, Kenya. Since then, a number of partnerships have been developed, funded by Swedish organisations. We have reasons to believe that new partnerships between Sweden and African countries can emerge by participating at the Africities conference in Kisumu 2022. What are the main issues to be addressed and the debates surrounding these issues at local, national, continental and international levels (as appropriate)? The main issues to be addressed are on potential collaborations between Sweden and African countries for the purpose of local democracy in relation the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, i.e. an agenda that is common for Local Authorities, communities, civil society organisations in Sweden and in African countries. The objectives of the session are: 1.      To establish understanding on Swedish programs for local democracy and sustainable development, as an opportunity for Africa, and 2.      To establish relations with participants for the purpose of exploring opportunities for partnerships between Sweden and partners in Africa. The session will meet the aforementioned objectives by providing information and stories on previous achievements by partners funded by ICLD and Swedish Institute, as well as through a dialogue on opportunities for future partnerships. The contribution of the session, in relation to the overall objective of the summit are to, provide a platform for dialogue between partners from Sweden and Kenya as well as with participants from other African countries in this session. The key outcome will be to establish a network in which future opportunities can be explored.
