PRESENTATION OF THE SESSION

VIOLENCE AND CRIME PREVENTION – GIZ This session is intended to facilitate learning on and promote collaboration for the planning an area-based approach to preventing violence, in particular gender-based violence, for municipal officials, political leaders and practitioners with the recognition that specific types of violence and crime are concentrated in cities, where many go or live with the hopes of reaping the urban dividend. Secondary cities, given their growing population, and rising contributions to GDPs and overall employment, are increasingly become sites of violence, crime and unrest. The Summit presents an opportunity to engage with local government leaders across the continent, many of whom are at the coalface of issues and are able to contribute at a political and/ or technical level to the creation of peaceful communities and cities. This aligns directly with priority 3 of the Summit “Improving the quality of life in intermediary cities” as well as the Summits objective of “Defining appropriate shared strategies in order to improve the living conditions of people at the local level.” Through the emphasis on the importance of gamification as an instrument for advocating for spatially targeted interventions for the enhancement of community safety, this session and the work it showcases contribute the Agenda 2063 Priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals that speak to the improvement of the quality of life and wellbeing for all citizens, which include safety and gender equality. Through the simulation of a fictional settlement with varying safety and other developmental challenges where players apply key lessons about collaborative (safety) planning and budgeting to a generic situation focused particularly on gender-based violence prevention, the objectives of the session are to:
  • Promote the use of gamification as a creative and useful approach to fostering collaboration and stimulating innovative responses for integrated area-based violence and crime prevention.
  • Facilitate learning on planning an area-based approach to preventing violence, in particular gender-based violence, for municipal officials, political leaders and practitioners
  • Promote the incorporation of knowledge management into the early stages of planning for violence prevention and the consideration of learning as inseparable from knowledge management.
